RBY OU Lusch's RBY teams

I have been on PP for almost a year now and this community has given me the opportunity to play RBY at the highest level and prove myself as a good player. I figured now, after RBY 1U season 9 has ended with a great result for myself, is as good a time as any to give something back, which I am planing to do in form of sharing some teams (I don't know how many but I might add one to this thread once in a while).

I would like to share teams I have made for any RBY tier in which I feel that I have a nice team to contribute, which means I will share at least one team from the tiers I have played in RBY (1U,2U,3U,4U). Furthermore I don't want to share "boring" 1U teams, because they are well known anyway (lead, big 4, filler 1U mon). I will focus on teams that either drop one of the big 4 or that use a "cool" (read non- 1U) Pokemon in the last slot, if anything. Still they are teams I have used (and will probably use in the future) in serious matches for example in Master Tournaments.

This is not an RMT and even though comments are welcome I would ask you to forgo stating obvious things like for example "this team is relatively weak to Lapras" when commenting a Chansey-less team because I believe that is well known and pretty unavoidable when the big 4-mon you chose to drop is Chansey.

For the sake of this showcase I gave all the Pokemon (more or less creative) nicknames. I will add importables, so feel free to use those teams yourself.

Introduction

Chansey is dropped from this one, which the team tries to make up for by using Alakazam and Starmie to spread paralysis early on in the game and take on Psychics in conjunction with Exeggutor while relying on Rhydon to counter Zapdos or Jolteon and take advantage of the paralysis thrown out in the earlygame.
Lapras and Starmie cause some problems for this team due to not including Chansey and Rhydon only making up for the electric weakness that comes with dropping Chansey in general.

The Team

alakazam.png

Genius (Alakazam)
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

Not much to say, standard lead Alakazam, paralyze as many things as possible, can take on Chansey if paralysed.

starmie.png

Mystery (Starmie)
- Thunder Wave
- Recover
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard

Starmie is the Pokemon that is used on this team to paralyze Chansey and do what Starmie does, crippling Psychic and Normal types with Thunderwave and keep (non MD) Eggy in check, as well as being a check to Slowbro and emergency check to opposing Starmie and Lapras.

exeggutor.png

Eierkopp (Exeggutor)
- Hyper Beam
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

This Exeggutor tries to take advantage of paralysed opponents (mainly Lead Alakazam/Jynx that try to block sleep) by using Hyper Beam. It can land a nice kill on the aformentioned Leads trying to block sleep and then potentially get sleep later on. Hyper Beam can also come in handy against a weakened Chansey/Starmie/Exeggutor later on in the game.
It is possible to go Double Edge over Hyper Beam for a more reliable but weaker option. Mega Drain can also be used, as it hits Starmie and GolDon which then helps to take pressure from my own Starmie. Stun Spore is not really needed because Starmie and Zam paralyze opposing Pokemon pretty reliably.

rhydon.png

Panzer (Rhydon)
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Body Slam

Rhydon counters electrics and draws in Ice type attacks which lets it work great alongside Starmie, I chose power over Explosion but that is the old argument and up to preference. I feel Rhydon is okay here because of the pressure it provides against Chansey and resting Slowbro which is good for the team.

snorlax.png

Tommy (Snorlax)
- Reflect
- Rest
- Body Slam
- Earthquake

Snorlax is naturally the most flexible member of the team in terms of what moveset it can run. I opted for Reflect+Rest. This helps dealing with oppsoing physical Snorlax variants as well as making it pretty unbeatable by Rocks or Seismic Toss Chansey (even though it has to hope for a timely crit against the latter). In some situations (if opposing Starmie or Lapras gets out of hand) one would wish for Self-Destruct but Reflect+Rest takes good advantage of the early game paralysis spread and can save you in certain late game situations against Tauros.

I have the same team in 3 other variations, nothing too special, I just replace Exeggutor with Victreebel sometimes and I play the team with Venusaur over Exeggutor as well, not because it is better than with Eggy or Bel, just because Venusaur is my favourite Pokemon and I actually think this team is a solid one to use it in. When using VicSaur though, the team plays obviously a little bit differently then when you play the Eggy variant.
With Venusaur I use an Amnesialax just because Venusaur is more unforgiving if things don't go your way than Exeggutor thanks to not being as bulky, having a worse typing and not having Explosion, and Amnesialax is a Pokemon that can make pretty big comebacks sometimes.
With Victreebel I use a 4 attacks Snorlax.

|
chansey.png
|
snorlax.png

articuno.png

Introduction

This team drops Tauros in order to make room for an additional Pokemon with a great mtachup against Tauros which I chose to be Articuno. Articuno has a nice synergy with Gengar who lures Earthquakes from GoldDon or Snorlax, all of which Articuno enjoys coming in on for free and do heavy damage, which is why I chose Gengar as a lead. The fact that I also have a Lapras on this team lets me preserve one of my ice types for the lategame which is usually unexpected.

The Team

gengar.png

Moonlight (Gengar)
- Explosion
- Night Shade
- Thunderbolt
- Hypnosis

Lead Gengar, Thundebrolt for the most possible damage on neutral targets and the super effective hit against waters who this team naturally struggles a bit due to having two ice types. Night Shade to be able to do at least some damage to Exeggutor.

lapras.png

Nessy (Lapras)
- Blizzard
- Body Slam
- Confuse Ray
- Thunderbolt

Lapras on this team is kind of an two edged sword because it shares the same checks with Articuno while being effective against the same Pokemon. This can be an advantage as well as a disadvantage. It is very rewarding when said common checks are removed (for example when Chansey got exploded on by Snorlax) but puts you into a diffucult situation if the opponent packs Chansey+Starmie or Chansey+Lapras which can become diffucult to break.

exeggutor.png

Coconut (Exeggutor)
- Explosion
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore

Standard Exeggutor, tries to get sleep vs Lead Alakazam and paralyze stuff with Stun Spore, most important Explosion targets for this team are Chansey, Slowbro and Starmie.

chansey.png

Nurse Joy (Chansey)
- Ice Beam
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

Chansey is important to deal with Lapras and Starmie who are in the way of my gameplan, which is to sweep with Lapras and mostly Articuno late in the game. Not much more to say really.

snorlax.png

Bob (Snorlax)
- Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Hyper Beam
- Self-Destruct

Snorlax should aim to make life hard for Chansey. If there is no other way sacrifice itself in order to take down Chansey is fine. On this team it should not trade for the opposing Lax though since this team packs quite a lot of anti Lax stuff to deal with it. Self-Destruct against an opposing Lapras or Slowbro is a nice trade for this team too.

articuno.png

Freezer (Articuno)
- Blizzard
- Reflect
- Agility
- Hyper Beam

Articuno, often capable to generate a good matchup lategame, especially against last mon Tauros looking to win the 1v1 versus whatever the opponent thinks your 6th is (due to having so many bulky Pokemon in this team, it is likely that your opponent does not let his Tauros fight them in the midgame). Articuno has a very nice matchup vs Tauros as it has a good chance to survie Body Slam*2 +Hyper Beam while 2HKOing in return. Also Blizzard's freeze chance is never bad. Now the moves: Agility is nice in case you get a free turn due to a freeze or when the opponent sacrifices a sleeping mon to Articuno in order to bring out something that outspeeds. Hyper Beam is the strongest move to hit Chansey with (outside of Sky Attack) and finish a waekened one off. The last move, Reflect, is probably a controversial pick but I feel it has some use in the scenarios I want to put Articuno in anyway. It is nice to protect from predicted Self-Destructs (mainly from Snorlaxes who are outside of Blizzard OHKO range and try to do as much damage as they still can for the next (possibly last) Pokemon to clean up, especially if this Pokemon is Tauros).

Moonlight (Gengar)
Ability: Levitate
- Explosion
- Night Shade
- Thunderbolt
- Hypnosis

Freezer (Articuno)
Ability: Pressure
- Blizzard
- Reflect
- Agility
- Hyper Beam

Nessy (Lapras)
Ability: Water Absorb
- Blizzard

Bob (Snorlax)
Ability: Immunity
- Body Slam

- Hyper Beam
- Self-Destruct

Nurse Joy (Chansey)

1U-Team #3 (no Snorlax)

gengar.png
|
chansey.png
|
exeggutor.png
|
rhydon.png
|
clefable.png
|
tauros.png

Introduction

This team drops Snorlax and replaces it with Clefable, which gives me the ability to paralyze and threaten Chansey earlygame with physical attacks with only one Pokemon while keeping my own Chansey free from status. The lack of physical power that comes from dropping Lax is made up for by using Rhydon which capitalizes on paralyzed opponents well and deals with Zapdos which otherwise would cause serious problems to this team.

The Team

gengar.png

Dead (Gengar)
- Explosion
- Night Shade
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt

Lead Gengar to sleep oppsing Jynx. Also always nice for mindgame shenanigans which makes the opponent think twice about Explosions and maybe makes him/her use EQ more often than he/she otherwise might, which is easier to switch into in general. Switch out vs Alakazam leads and sleep them with Exeeggutor. On this team Jynx would probably be the better lead for my gameplan but since I use Clefable on this one I wanted to have its shadow too...

chansey.png

Shit (Chansey)
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

Chansey, classic BoltBeam to perform as a surefire Starmie counter. Reflect/Seismic Toss Chansey works well on this team too, especially since it is relatively likely to not get paralyzed early on in the game since my main way to spread para with this team early on is Clefable which it does reliably, meaning Chansey won't encounter opposing T-Wave users much.

exeggutor.png

Eierkopp (Exeggutor)
- Explosion
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore

Standard Eggy, here to sleep Alakazam in case the opponent lead with it. Otherwise secondary paralysis spreader and mainly Psychic resist and switch into opposing Exeggutor and Alakazam. Explosion to take down something with it when the end is near. If you can trade Eggys with this, it is fine.

rhydon.png

Panzer (Rhydon)
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Body Slam

Rhydon is here to act as a tool to pressure paralyzed Chansey (Reflect/S-Toss Chansey in particular) as well as Snorlax and Paralyzed targets in general. Stops Zapdos from running though my team because Clefable makes a mediocre Zapdos matchup which teams have without a Ground type even worse.

clefable.png

Alive (Clefable)
- Thunder Wave
- Hyper Beam
- Blizzard
- Mega Kick

Clefable, the Pokemon that makes this team special. Clefable is here to come in after the opposing lead got slept because it covers basically every option the opponent has for that turn. If he stays in with Alakazam/Jynx, Clefable posseses Normal STAB to force them out. If they go to their Chansey/Exeggutor Thunder Wave and Blizzard respectively punish them. Though one might consider switching to Gengar vs Eggy to let it take the sleep, Clefable is great against Chansey since it is one of very few Pokemon that can paralyze it and threaten it with physical moves at the same time. Clefable's Mega Kick is slightly stronger than Snorlax' Body Slam but is kind of a high risk-high reward move due to accuracy, especially if Clefable is paralyzed. Thus you can exchange it for Body Slam if you want a more consistent option. Clefable is faster than Chansey and Exeggutor which means even if they paralyze it back it still outspeeds and does heavy damage to them. Blizzard is there to hit the aformentioned Exeggutor as well as Rhyodn and Golem. Hyper Beam is the fourth move of choice since it does the most damage in a situation where Clafable is about to faint. Somestimes Clefable can even paralyze Tauros later in the game to give you an advantage in the lategame. Due to it's variety of options, especially Counter, the opponent usually does not know what to expect from Clefable exactly. Admittingly, if the opposing Chansey has Counter the above mentioned strategy can backfire at you, since unlike Snorlax Clefable cannot check for it well.

|
rhydon.png
|
snorlax.png

tauros.png

Introduction

Starmie and Rhydon have a nice synergy between each other:
Rhydon can take care of the Electric type Pokemon of the tier and switch into Thunderbolts aimed at Starmie while being able to pressure opposing Snorlax and Chansey, both of which Starmie struggles against. In Return Starmie serves as a great switch-in to Blizzards aimed at Rhydon from opposing Tauros and can check most Exeggutors well, while being able to spread paralysis via Thunder Wave which makes Rhydon that much more of a threat. Considering that synergy, it is only natural to come up with this team structure.

The Team

starmie.png

Starmie
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

Starmie is a great lead and on this team the only dedicated one, which is why it is used in that slot. The typical moveset for a lead-Starmie would run Psychic over Thunderbolt but considering that I want to make use of this Starmie later on in the battle to form a core with Rhydon -which in itself fares generally well vs most Gengar- I want Thundebolt to be able to hurt opposing Waters such as Starmie,Lapras and Slowbro more -opposing Starmie is eypecially important here- . It also suits Starmie+Rhydon better vs (the rare) Articuno and does more damage to Jynx. In addition, most lead-Gengar switch out of Starmie anyway fearing Psychic, so I am willing to take that trade.
Thunder Wave and Recover are self-explanatory and Blizzard is there to hit Exeggutor.

chansey.png

Chansey
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam

Chansey, important check to special attackers, most importantly on a Rhydon-team Lapras and Starmie, which is why I opted for the Thunderbolt set. Paralyze opposing Chansey/Exeggutor/Starmie/basically whatever you can get, it helps Rhydon immensely.

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Stun Spore
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

Exeggutor as my sleeper to threaten the opposing team mid-game. Psychic does a chunk to everything that does not resist it or is not Chansey, it's pretty clear... I decided to go with Stun Spore as the 4th move on this set because it often hits targets such as opposing Exeggutor/Chansey/Alakazam/Stramie which turns their Rhydon-match-up heavily into Rhydon's favour.

rhydon.png

Rhydon
- Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Body Slam

Rhydon counters electrics and draws in Ice type attacks which lets it work great alongside Starmie. If the aforementioned 3 Pokemon did their job and spread para through the opposing team, Rhydon has his time to shine. And it becomes quite the dangerous Pokemon to face let alone switch into. try to give yourself a free switch-in such as on a predicted Recover/Soft-Boiled from paralyzed Alakazams or Chanseys or on a predicted Electric-type attack or defensive switch and start doing loads of damage. Usually Tauros will force Rhydon out after it KOed something but that agin is what Starmie is for, ideally.

snorlax.png

Snorlax
- Reflect
- Rest

Snorlax fills an important defensive role in that it can serve as a switch-in to opposing Snorlax' Body Slams due to Reflect and thus preventing Rhydon from having to risk getting paraslammed trying to sponge Snorlax.

tauros.png

Introduction

This is a rather defensive team simply because it features all of the (good) RBY-Pokemon that learn Recover (or Soft-Boiled). The team is designed to slowly get an advantage over your opponent via status spreading and defensively answering your opponent's assaults with the recovering core, that in itself usually gives you quite good control over status your own team takes. It should slowly break the opposing team, while not being broken itself.

The Team

alakazam.png

Alakazam
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

Not much to say, standard lead Alakazam, paralyze as many things as possible, can take on Chansey if paralysed.

starmie.png

Starmie
- Thunder Wave
- Recover
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard

Starmie, just a great Pokemon to have against opposing Exeggutor and Tauros in general naturally finds its way on this team again. Blizzard to hit Exeggutor (and Zapdos in a pinch), Thunder Wave and Recover for paralyzing and Recovering shenanigans. In the last slot Thunderbolt is chosen because Chansey on this team does not carry it, which would otherwise leave me without any Thunderbolts on my team and that is definitely never a good thing. (Good rule of thumb here: your team needs at least one Thunderbolt, otherwise the plethora of great Water types in RBY will give you a way harder time.). You could probably try running Psychic over Thunderbolt on this set, but then I would recommend to use BoltBeam Chansey and switch the positions of Starmie and Alakazam.

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Double Edge
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

Eggy... Does what Eggy does. 4th slot here is Double Edge to hit paralyzed opposing Alakazam/Jynx as they switch in trying to block sleep. It also comes in handy sometimes vs opposing Exeggutor and Chansey (especially on a random critical hit).

chansey.png

Chansey
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Thunder Wave
- Reflect

Reflect Chansey to switch in on Snorlax, not really reliable but it's the best you can get to prevent the opponent from gaining too much momentum with their Lax against a relatively passive style of play that this team comes with. It is important to keep this Chansey (unlike other Chansey's on other teams) free from paralysis, so that it can keep on doing the aforementioned job of being a Snorlax sponge.

snorlax.png

Snorlax
- Hyper Beam
- Self-Destruct
- Body Slam
- Earthquake

So here is the Snorlax I chose. The classical 4 attacks variant with Slam, Quake, Beam and Boom. In the spirit of this team, people might ask why not a more defensive variant with Reflect and Rest is used here. Well... I feel the team has enough of a defense as it is and thus I chose an offensive Snorlax for it. Reflect Chansey+Reflect Snorlax is a combination, that I generally don't really like using since those kind of defensive teams using Reflect Chansey demand from their Lax that it can open up holesand really break something's neck when it has to. With a Rest+Reflect variant of Snorlax that is only somehow achieved if you chose to run Hyper Beam on it. But that leaves you completely useless against Gengar and makes it easier for Rhydon to fish for a crit to break you, let alone that scouting for counter is relatively shitty with such a set.
So yea... PhysLax it is ;]

1U-Team #6 (Jolteon+Articuno)

starmie.png

|
articuno.png
|
snorlax.png
|
tauros.png

Introduction

The combination of Jolteon and Articuno is quite intriguing. Similarly to Starmie and Rhydon, they have great synergy, but this time more in an offensive manner. Jolteon nails Starmie and Lapras and Slowbro which wall Articuno and can check Zapdos which overcomes Articuno offensively, while Cuno can get rid of GolDon, Exeggutor and Snorlax, all of which Jolteon struggles with (yes, even against Eggy). There remains one problem in form of Chansey, which both have a hard time dealing with. But there are 4 other Pokemon on a team to try and take care of that.

The Team

jolteon.png

Jolteon
- Thunder Wave
- Double Kick
- Pin Missile
- Thunderbolt

Jolteon does well against most Pokemon that are typically seen in the lead position because paralysis and a high critical hit chance can make some things happen early on if you get lucky. It even exceeds the hax potential Alakazam brings thanks to Thunderbolt (and Pin Missle vs Eggy) actually doing a good amaount of damage to everything typically seen. If you do not get lucky however Jolteon takes sleep turn 1 vs Gengar or Jynx for example and it does not do it as well as Zam. Overall though, Jolteon is not a bad choice in the lead, but I'm not too comfortable with it since it should rather complement Articuno than being sleeping deadweight in a game. But since Jolteon matches up well vs lead Starmie, which would otherwise be a pain to deal with for this team, I take that trade.
It is worth noting however, that if you expect your opponent to lead with Alakazam, swapping Jolteon and Exeggutor is definitely the way you should go with this team!

starmie.png

Starmie
- Thunder Wave
- Recover
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard

I decided against using a Chansey on this team (especially when leading Exeggutor instead of Jolteon) because I wanted something that outspeeds opposing Exeggutor and therefore is able to get in that crucial Blizzard on it that puts it in OHKO range from Articuno, so that i don't have to worry about opposing Eggy's Explosion with my Articuno. This also gives my own Exeggutor a little bit more freedom to explode early on opposing Chansey, which is in the way for Jolteon and Articuno.
Thunderbolt is the obvious choice on that kind of team to have one additional Electric attack vs opposing Slowbro/Starmie/Lapras if Jolteon finds itself unable to fulfill that role at the time. Additionally Starmie is one of the few Pokemon on this team that can paralyze opposing Chansey (ideally as it switches in) with T-Wave.

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Stun Spore
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

Exeggutor. Again, use this as a lead if you are expecting Alakazam lead from your opponent, a sleeping Alakazam is one fast T-Wave user less that could criple Articuno. Other than that, Eggy does what Eggy does. Stun Spore because I need some more source of paralysis on the team since it does not carry either Alakazam or Chansey. Exploding early on to trade with Chansey is not a bad thing on this team at all since it immensely aids Articuno.

articuno.png

Articuno
- Agility
- Blizzard
- Hyper Beam
- Ice Beam

Articuno, extremely dangerous Pokemon given the right circumstances. It has the strongest special attack in the entirety of RBY in STAB 358 spc Blizzard (tied with Zapdos Thunder and Moltres Fire Blast but those are more inaccurate than Blizzard) and has overall great stats which comes with a great natural bulk. So it comes as no surprise that once ice resists and Chansey are gone, this thing is a menace, especially since it has good to great matchup against 3 out of the big 4. Unfortunally Ice resist are pretty common in 1U and thus it is not too easy to properly fit on a team.
Anyway, concerning the moveset, Blizzard, Agility and Hyper Beam are the obvious choices as they all have a pretty clear and useful purpose (Blizzard stongest attack, Agility to be faster than everything even after para, Hyper Beam strongest 1-turn attack vs Ice resists). Now in the 4th moveslot I chose Ice Beam. While it might seem redundant, Articuno does not have that great other options. Reflect and Rest are the most notable ones here. I decided for Ice Beam because it provides a way to secure a kill without haveing to risk missing [it is almost as strong as Lapras' Blizzard anyway, mind you].

snorlax.png

Snorlax
- Self-Destruct
- Hyper Beam
- Body Slam
- Earthquake

PhysLax once more, I need something to dispose of Chansey and in a pinch Lapras and Starmie, so Self-Destruct is a must. Not much more to say really.

tauros.png

Tauros
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Earthquake
- Blizzard

Tauros... On this team can more freely go 1v1 vs stuff like Lapras or Starmie, that it otherwise would not want to fight. People will be glad to let their Lapras fight a Tauros thinking they made a good trade while in reality they just traded their possibly only remaining wall for Articuno.

So this team is a rather unconventional one. Reflect Alakazam is an absolute beast if the opponent has run our of Psychic switch-ins. I should probably add that this team was built in the current meta in which I believe there is a lack of Self-Destruct Snorlax in favour of bulky Lax variants with Rest. But those are set-up fodder for Reflect Alakazam since they would need a crit to prevent Zam from going to town with Reflect up. The thought behind this team was trying to set up exactly that scenario, the opponent not having Psychic switch-ins anymore and wreck what is left with Alakazam, and if Alakazam does not manage to sweep, it will have done enough damage and paraspreading that Tauros can clean relatively comfortably. So how to set up such a situation? This team takes a rather agressive approach that I will try to explain in the description of each Pokemon. As you can see, it has 3 Explosion users, and the simple (but effective) strategy is to try and get the roadblocks for Alakazam out of the way as quickly as possible using firstly sleep and secondly Explosions. I am not claiming that this is the best way to implement a Reflect Alakazam, but it worked for me. I have to admit though, I used it when I was almost sure that my opponent would not bring a Jynx lead, which this team has a hard time going up against. This team demands very specific set-up, that I am going to try to explain in greater detail than normally.

The Team

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Double-Edge
- Explosion
- Mega Drain
- Sleep Powder

So here comes the first surprise. You are looking at an Exeggutor lead, which is uncommon for good reasons; but not enough, you are looking at Psychic-less lead Exeggutor! Let me explain. The plan is to use this team when u can be pretty sure he's not the type of player who lead with a sleeper. So you face either Alakazam or Starmie and go for the Sleep powder on them. Here come the moves into play, against neither of them do you need Psychic. The plan is to Double Edge Alakazam and Mega Drain Starmie when they were put to sleep. Then they both are in range of getting KOed by a critical hit (plus in Starmie's case the opponent does not want to give my Exeggutor more recovery), so they are going to switch out to either Exeggutor or Chansey, both targets that my Reflect Alakazam needs removed in order to do the job, so I explode on the second turn after I got the sleep. Worst case, they do stay in with their sleeping Pokemon/double switch to their sleeping mon in case they switched out immediately, but that is also okay since both Starmie and Alakazam are also in the way of Alakazam, and for that situation we have Gengar or Lapras to try and get sleep on another target. In case the opponent leads Gengar or Jynx you stay in with Eggy and take the sleep (or get lucky and still get your own sleep) and switch afterwards to either Lapras or Gengar depending on which sleeper your opponent brought and try getting sleep that way and go from there.

lapras.png

Lapras
- Blizzard
- Body Slam
- Sing
- Thunderbolt

So here is Lapras. It is one of my backup sleepers and an agressive way to deal with Exeggutor. Remember the early-game strategyof this team. If opposing Exeggutor is still healthy when Lapras comes out it either means that my Eggy's Explosion caught the opposing Chansey in which case Lapras is extremely dangerous (especilly if their T-Wave lead is asleep) or it comes in to get the second sleep after their initial sleep absorber was hit in which case it matches up well against everything my opponent is likely to bring out (which I consider either Exeggutor or Chansey and maybe Tauros). It is also here to soften up opposing Snorlax since my own Snorlax has a different role on the team.

gengar.png

Gengar
- Explosion
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt
- Night Shade

The next unusual thing: here is also a Gengar, outside of the lead position wich is rarely seen. What this Pokemon contributes to the team are an Explosion and a potential way to get a second sleep, while also providing some sort of defense against the Water/Psychis types Starmie and Slowbro that Reflectzam hates. Gengar beats both of them with a critical hit Thunderbolt but has to watch out for Psychic variants of both of them. Either way, Psychic on Starmie at least means it does not have thunderbolt which makes my Lapras a little bit better vs it. Why Gengar then and not Jolteon for example? While Jolteon would be decent in this slot and has the upside over Gengar that it outspeeds certain Pokemon and has access to Thunder-Wave, I definitely wanted that Explosion while combining the ttributes I meantioned earlier. Remember, the team plays agressively trying to get rid of Chansey and Psychic types, but those are exactly the Pokemon tat switch into Gengar and thus are not too hard to catch with a boom. Also my opponent would need to predict correctly every time to avoid that I get the targets I want to get in the end anyway.

alakazam.png

Alakazam
- Psychic
- Recover
- Reflect
- Thunder Wave

So here it is, Reflect Alakazam. You might say, why going through all this trouble and try to tailor everything just for one Pokemon to have an optimal set-up. Well, in my opinion, Reflect Alakazam is just that good in those circumstances that I try to achive that I am willing to bother. Anyway, this is the set. Alakakazam can come out earlier than planned and get some T-Waves off (mostly on Chansey), the team won't fail because of that. Though ideally you manage to clean the field from Exeggutor (or keep it low enough that it cannot switch into Zam), Chansey and opposing Starmie/Alakazam should they be there too. Mixed attackers like Zapdos or Lapras will not have an easy time fighting a Reflect Alakazam and obviously physical attackers such as Golem, Rhydon, Snorlax and Tauros do not enjoy the matchup. So basically, once you get this Alakazm in, you get up the Reflect and spam Psychic (anf if necessary throw out T-Waves obviously) until everything on the opposing team crumbles in front of you.

Self-Destruct against an opposing Slowbro is a nice trade for this team too, but really try to boom it on a Chansey. Don't even try to get greedy and get more value out of it, like going 2 for 1 or something. If this Snorlax takes out something on the opposing Team that could potentially sponge Psychics, it has done its job. That concludes the 3 Explosions that should be enough to free the way from Psychic resists.

1U-Team #8 (Non-lead Jynx)

|

|

|
tauros.png

Introduction

Here's a team that uses non-lead Jynx. Jynx is typically seen in the lead position, but I think it has some potential outside of it, mainly because an unparalyzed Jynx can cause some serious damage with her nice STAB Blizzard or Psychic, in addition to a very fast and relatively accurate sleep inducing move. When building this team I did not plan to use non-lead Jynx, but rather wanted to use a surprising Starmie set and found that Jynx fit my plan with this set relatively well, but I'll get into detail in the descriptions.

The Team

starmie.png

Starmie
- Psychic
- Hydro Pump
- Recover
- Thunder Wave

So here is the deal: against opposing Starmie, take no risks and no para and just switch to Jynx and get the sleep, it's relatively save. against Gengar, you can Psychic as usual, against opposing Jynx, you HPump and do damage, maybe getting lucky with a critical and after your Starmie got slept, go to your own Jynx to sleep the opposing one. But here is the main purpose and thought process behind this set, against lead-Alakazam:
The "usual" tactic with non-lead Jynx that exists, is using a Gengar lead and tries to explode on Zam, which means avoid getting crit and then getting the 2/3 roll to kill. Then you can go out with Jynx and very likely face something slower and put it to sleep, which is not your opponent's dedicated sleep bait. That is a huge advantage in a game. I try the same here but only with less risk (and probably a lower chance of working), but ultimately more reward if it works since I don't need to sacrifice one Pokemon. So the plan is obviously using the surprise Hydro Pump to net a kill on the unsuspecting lead-Alakazam. What I am trying to abuse is that after one special drop, Hydro Pump does over half ro Alakazam. In addition to outspeeding Zam after one drop this can get a surprising KO. Now obviously you need to get a special drop before he gets one (but Zam is not going for Psychics all the time), and you should not reaveal Pump until u have a chance to KO, but if those things fall into place, with non-lead Jynx you get a sleepon something else, while being able to keep playing with your lead alive, basically playing 6 vs 4.
While this set is not that optimal in the mid stages of a agame due to not hitting Exeggutor, I think it is worth the try for my plan. Also Hydro Pump+ Psychic is cool vs Normals (even Chansey has to watch out for Hydro Pump after a special drop).

jynx.png

Jynx
- Lovely Kiss
- Blizzard
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss

So here is the Jynx. It's purpose is basically to get a sleep on something else than Alakazam, and it complements my Starmie well because my Starmie does not hurt Exeggutor, so Jynx is not a bad partner in that regard. Keep Jynx free from paralysis and you'll be surprised what a pain in the ass for the opponent it can be (one never sees that because Jynx is basically always paralyzed). LK, Blizzard and Psychic are no-brainers, the last slot could not matter less, Rest is an invitation for Tauros and Snorlay and rarely ever of good use, especially when u want to use Jynx as a hit-and-run Pokemon like on this team. I think I tried Substitue but never ended up using it, so I thought S-Toss for, idk, opposing Jynx or Slowbro or something, it does not matter really.

chansey.png

Chansey
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam

Chansey, does what Chansey does. Can take para on this team to support Starmie in blocking status and should aim at paralyzing stuff once you get your sleep

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Stun Spore
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

Even though I have a Jynx, I still want my Exeggutor for all the good attributes it brings. Being the switch-in to Rocks and emergency check to Snorlax and having the ability to land crucial Sleep Powders or Stun Spores in basically any phase of the game, plus the ever present threat of Explosion, it is just too good to pass off.

snorlax.png

Snorlax
- Sefl-Destruct
- Hyper Beam
- Body Slam
- Earthquake

4 attacks Snorlax, it is just a very flexible and dangerous set. That Hyper Beam and Self-Destruct, and yes, that EQ they have so many good uses and provide me with more options o fall back on during the game. It is a less defensive approach and switching into opposing Snorlax can be a little problematic, but I still did not want to ge the Reflect route because this set, when played right, will still be able to remove 1 or even 2 threats of the opposing team when I need it to.

1U-Team #9 (Jynx+Zapdos)

jynx.png
|
zapdos.png
|
chansey.png
|
exeggutor.png
|
snorlax.png
|
tauros.png

Introduction

This team is rather standart again. It uses a Jynx in the lead position to try and get that first sleep and Zapdos as a mixed attacker that troubles every team that does not carry a Rock/Ground type. Not much more to say really.

The Team

jynx.png

Jynx
- Lovely Kiss
- Blizzard
- Psychic
- Rest

Jynx lead, sleep the opposing lead and fire off a Blizzard on their switch-in, trying to get lucky...

zapdos.png

Zapdos
- Thunderbolt
- Drill Peck
- Agility
- Thunder Wave

I believe there are two main ways to play Zapdos. Either you try to keep it hidden until you know the complete opposing team (if possible) to make sure there is not Ground type, or you show it relatively early to pressure for example a resting Snorlax and find out that way if they have a Rock or not, which means that you should keep your Exeggutor healthy until that early Zapdos reveal if possible so that you can still play around the opoosing Rock. In general, Zapdos is just a beast and probably the most dangerous Pokemon to every team that does not carry a rock, so whenever you bring it out safely, it will cause damage.

chansey.png

Chansey
- Thunder Wave
- Soft-Boiled
- Seismic Toss
- Reflect

Because Zapdos takes a rather offensive approach and my Chansey does not have to beat Starmie at every cost, I can drop Thunderbolt. Reflect+Seismic Toss is just a solid set if you want your Chansey to stick around as a defensive reserve as opposed to being a more offensive threat with super effective coverage moves that inflict actual damage. So I chose to run this set in here. But it is interchangeable tbh...

exeggutor.png

Exeggutor
- Hyper Beam
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Explosion

Chansey is in charge of spreading para and I wanted to give my Eggy some more offesnsive options. I could have gone for Mega drain especially since I play a Zapdos team, but Rocks won't let me hit them with it anywayand Hyper Beam can come in handy vs weakened opposing Starmie/Alakazam/Chansey and Exeggutor.

snorlax.png

Snorlax
- Sefl-Destruct
- Hyper Beam
- Body Slam

2U-Team #1

haunter.png
|
hypno.png
|
kadabra.png
|
tentacruel.png
|
victreebel.png
|
gyarados.png

Introduction

This 2U team relies on covering weaknesses from each Pokemon as good as possible with the 2 Psychics to cover my Poison type Pokemon and Gyrarados to cover the Earthquake weakness in general. the goal is to spread sleep and paralysis onto the opposing team and then try to sweep with either Gyarados or Tentacruel. For that you need to take care of Haunter and Raichu mainly, which this team does pretty well due to having Kadabra and Hypno to deal with especially the former but also the latter to an extent while Victreebel walls Raichu. Dodrio is the nemesis of this team as it does not carry a Rhydon and basically has no reliable answers to it.

The Team

haunter.png

scared? (Haunter)
- Explosion
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt
- Night Shade

Haunter tries to get an early sleep with Hypnosis against basically anything but Kadabra and works as a pivot for normal type moves and lures Earthquakes for Gyrados. Obviously kinda dependant on mindgames but a great Pokemon because it makes your opponent think twice about his move. Thunderbolt for Gyarados, Night Shade to hit Psychics and Explosion as the emergency button.

hypno.png

tired? (Hypno)
- Psychic
- Rest
- Thunder Wave
- Seismic Toss

Check to almost anything if needed, takes on Psychics and spreads paralysis. If you manage to keep it relatively healthy throughout the match it can cripple a crucial piece in your opponent's team for the late game and make it easier for the teammates. Seismic Toss to hit Kadabra/Hypno and force them to recover. Hypnosis is not needed since Haunter and Victreebel take care of sleep.

kadabra.png

headache? (Kadabra)
- Psychic
- Thunder Wave
- Recover
- Seismic Toss

Secondary Psychic check if it has to. Optimally preserved for the lategame as it outspeeds a lot of the tier and can sweep or at least weaken things crucially.

tentacruel.png

wrapped? (Tentacruel)
- Hydro Pump
- Swords Dance
- Wrap
- Hyper Beam

As mentioned in the introduction, this is the sweeper of this team. With incredible speed and access to Wrap the only way to escape a sweep is to pray for a miss (or multiple misses rather). The Pokemon that give it the most issues are Kadabra, Haunter and Raichu two of them only when unparalysed. Paralysing Kadabra is normally not that hard if the opponent uses it early in the game and if you can keep Tentacrual hidden. Haunter has a hard time against this team with all the Psychic types and even though it is able to stop wrap, will take huge damage from Hydro Pump, while being outsped by Cruel. Raichu does not neccessarily enjoy a switch in either and if it comes in on Wrap that is what I have Victreebel for.

victreebel.png

lured? (Victreebel)
- Wrap
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore
- Razor Leaf

Raichu check and sleeper+paralysis spreader. Razor Leaf hits hard due to being alwayas a crit and if enoguh things are paralysed Wrap can sweep or at least give you a free switch/mindgame situation.

gyarados.png

destroyed? (Gyarados)
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam

Works well with Haunter. Hits hard on both sides and can tank a hit if it needs to. Hydro Pump is for the 2HKO on Kangaskhan, Thunderbolt for opposing Gyarados or other water types. Body Slam and Hyper Beam hit Hypno and Kadabra really hard.

scared? (Haunter)
Ability: Levitate
- Explosion
- Hypnosis
- Thunderbolt
- Night Shade

tired? (Hypno)
Ability: Insomnia
- Psychic
- Rest
- Thunder Wave
- Seismic Toss

Ability: Clear Body
- Hydro Pump
- Swords Dance
- Wrap

3U-Team #1

clefable.png

venusaur.png

|
dugtrio.png
|
vaporeon.png
|
mr-mime.png

Introduction

This 3U team tries to score an early sleep on the opposing team and tries to put offensive pressure on the opposing team from the start on by leading Clefable and threatening with fast but frail hitters in form of Dugtrio and Electabuzz. All Pokemon in this team fill a defensive as well as an offensive role as they cover each others weaknesses and still hit hard each.

The Team

clefable.png

Fairy (Clefable)
- Body Slam
- Sing
- Blizzard
- Hyper Beam

Clefable is a nice lead as it can serve as a sleeper with Sing especially against slower leads, while putting pressure on frail leads like Mr. Mime. Body Salm hits everything hard and threatens to paralyze any Pokemon in the tier other than the normal types which, should they switch in, can be put to sleep by Sing. Hyper Beam is there to kill something right from the start (Mr. Mime can die to Body Slam+Hyper Beam) if one wants to risk that, but also to do as much damage as possible before fainting later on in the match. Blizzard hits Exeggcute very hard as well as being overall the best move Clefable has against normal resists plus the freeze chance is never bad.

venusaur.png

Rasierer (Venusaur)
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Sleep Powder
- Razor Leaf

Venusaur is capable of getting a sleep if Clefable failed to do that before. It hits anything hard that does not resist it with Razor Leaf while being able to support the team with eventual Body Slam paras. It works well with Electabuzz due to being able to check the ground types Electabuzz runs from while luring in Pokemon such as Charizard or Fearow which can be exploited by Buzz.

electabuzz.png

Blackout (Electabuzz)
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

The longer the game lasts, the more dangerous gets unparalysed Elctabuzz since he can wear down ground types upon switch in with Psychic (has a decent critical hit rate too) such that his checks get weakened over time. Electabuzz keeps the flying types in check while being able to exchange Thunder Waves with opposing Clefable/Electabuzz/Mr. Mime if it has to. Psychic is weak but still lets it do damage to Venusaur.

dugtrio.png

Diglett^3 (Dugtrio)
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Substitute
- Slash

Dugtrio is there to check Electabuzz and keep it from paralysing the whole team. Even though Dugtrio is weak it is faster than everything relevant in this tier except for Aerodactyl which makes it hard to switch into multiple times because it gets to attack twice and has a high critical hit rate. This also makes Dugtrio one of the potential late game sweepers of this team.

vaporeon.png

Fischweib (Vaporeon)
- Hydro Pump
- Blizzard
- Rest
- Body Slam

Vaporeon is the defensive backbone of this team. It neutralizes opposing waters and forces them to use Rest which can be exploited by Electabuzz, Venusaur or Mr. Mime. In addition it checks Charizard and ground types while being able to basically 1v1 every relevant Pokemon in this tier not named Venusaur (or an opposing water) at full health thanks to its nice bulk. That makes it an emergency check to almost everything if needed.

mr-mime.png

Marcel (Mr. Mime)
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

Mr. Mime. Try find an opportunity to come in and spam Psychic which nothing in this tier enjoys, particularly if the opponen lets his Mr. Mime sleep. Thunder Wave can paralyze anything fast (except Dugtrio) that usually relies on its speed to be effective.

Fairy (Clefable)
Ability: Cute Charm
- Body Slam
- Sing
- Blizzard
- Hyper Beam

Rasierer (Venusaur)
Ability: Overgrow
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Sleep Powder
- Razor Leaf

Blackout (Electabuzz)
Ability: Static
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

Diglett^3 (Dugtrio)
Ability: Sand Veil
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Substitute
- Slash

Fischweib (Vaporeon)
Ability: Water Absorb
- Hydro Pump
- Blizzard
- Rest
- Body Slam

Marcel (Mr. Mime)
Ability: Soundproof
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

3U-Team #2

sandslash.png

Introduction

This Team went 5-0 in the 3U World Championship. It features a Gastly, which is an extremely useful Pokemon with great defensive and offensive capabilities thanks to its unique typing and decent speed and special with good moves to capitalize on that. The 5 Pokemon outside of the lead position supplement each other well defensively and give me room to play around the opposing team while bing able to inflict good damage each. This team does not aim for a lategame sweep with a Pokemon that sets up but rather outdamages the opposing team in the long run.

The Team

clefable.png

Clefable
- Body Slam
- Sing

Venusaur
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Sleep Powder
- Razor Leaf

Venusaur is capable of getting a sleep if Clefable failed to do that before. It hits anything hard that does not resist it with Razor Leaf while being able to support the team with eventual Body Slam paras. On this team it does not have to commit to Venusaur Dittos because of Gastly which helps it staying healthy and unparalyzed if I want to throughout the match. The later the game the more valuable for yourself and devestating for the opponent is a healthy Venusaur.

gastly.png

Gastly
- Psychic
- Explosion
- Thunderbolt
- Night Shade

Gastly finds easy entrances thanks to Venusaur being on almost every team and can deal a good amount of damage to some Pokemon in the tier such as Venusaur, Aerodactyl and Water-types or chip away at bulkier ones like Clefable. Night Shade does steady damage and is good to use early in the game to chip at the opposing team. It hast to watch out for Mr. Mime, Electabuzz and Ground-types but Mr. Mime has ideally already been crippled by the Clefable lead while the others are taken care of by teammembers like Venusaur, Vaporeon, and Sandslash. Explosion is weak but still the emergency button it always is, especially if the opponent has already seen the 3 other moves he might not expect it since he thinks there is Hypnosis in the last slot. Gastly is a good check to most SDers and Aerodactyl thanks to them relying on normal type moves, has to watch out for Earthquakes though.

charizard.png

Charizard
- Earthquake
- Fire Blast
- Fire Spin
- Slash

Charizard is here to support Gastly in its role to check stuff like Pinsir and Venusaur while in return being able to switch in on predicted EQs aimed at Gastly and dishing out fast Fire Blasts in general that hurt everything not called Vaporeon and Fire types. It is just an all around good Pokemon to have in the back for this team if things get out of hand. I opted for the all out attacking set with Fire Spin because I wanna deal damage right from the start without needing to set up since chipping away at switch-ins helps the team more.

vaporeon.png

Vaporeon
- Hydro Pump
- Blizzard
- Rest
- Body Slam

Vaporeon is the go-to switch in to almost everything if needed because it is extremely bulky. but having a huge special stat it can dish out a great amount of damage too, so that it is only checked by opposing Water-types which it forces to rest so that Venusaur or Gastly can come in and threaten damage safely. Hydro Punp nails almost everything except for Venusaur and Waters. So if the team managed to chip at them/eliminate them Vaporeon becomes a nightmare.

sandslash.png

Sandslash
- Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance

Sandslash is on this team to keep electabuzz from being a problem. It hits hard with Earthquake while being ble to take a hit if necessary.

Clefable
Ability: Cute Charm
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam

- Blizzard

Venusaur
Ability: Overgrow

sandslash.png

Introduction

This Team went 4-0 in the 3U World Championship. It basically tries to overpower the opposing team by spamming strong STAB Blizzards and Hydro Pumps from the two water types which is being supplemented by Venusaur and Mr.Mime trying to deal damage to the opposing Waters. Sandslash is necessary to not be run over by Electabuzz. Aerodactyl takes over the role as a fast cleaner.

The Team

dewgong.png

Dewgong
- Body Slam
- Ice Beam
- Blizzard
- Rest

I lead Dewgong because not much if anything likes to take STAB Blizzard and faster Sleeper leads such as Venusaur or Venomoth are rare. Mr. Mime lead has thunderbolt to heavily damage Dewgong but every damage Mr. Mime takes is important and there to stay, while Dewgong may find an opportunity to rest later on, also Sandslash is waiting in the back to take a Thunderbolt from Mime to keep the damage taken for Dewgong in check. Clefable lead can trade blows with Dewgong but as for opposing Mr. Mime, every damage Clefable takes is importent, so I take that. Charizard should run from Dewgong, giving me the opportunity to capitalize on the defensive switches my oppoents goes for. I chose Ice Beam over Surf because the only Pokemon Surf would be better against are mono Fire-types, who are not common at all and also I have a Vaporeon to take care of those in case I should really run into one and Ice beam gives me more chances to score a freeze, while Blizzard is the strong move to deal the most damage.

venusaur.png

Venusaur
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Sleep Powder
- Razor Leaf

Venusaur, not much to say, gets sleep reliably, hits hard with Razor Leaf and can take hits. It definitely is imprtent especially on this team since bulky Water types can be difficult to deal with and usually the best way to do that is to force them to rest and pressure with Venusaur.

mr-mime.png

Mr. Mime
- Psychic
- Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Seismic Toss

Mr. Mime is an importan glue mon for the team, spreading the important Thunder Wave and doing damage with STAB Psychic (especially to Venusaur) while threatening Waters with Thunderbolt. In this Team Mr. Mime should not be played wrecklessly and only take a Thunder Wave if you really need the Thunder Wave on the opposing Pokemon (mostly Clefable, Mr. Mime, Electabuzz) as well, as having a healthy Mr. Mime for the late game can pay off big time.

aerodactyl.png

Aerodactyl
- Double Edge
- Fire Blast
- Hyper Beam
- Rest

Aerodactyl is generally a solid pick since it always does some good damage and has a key resistance in Normal. It adds a fast Pokemon to the team which is otherwise would lack and can get good opportunities to switch in on resisted hits like Hyper Beam or Earthquake. Writing the Analysis of the team however, I am not entirely sure anymore why exactly I used Aero, since it only adds up to an Electabuzz weakness. It surely has nice traits, but as a fast attacker, maybe one would wanna use Dugtrio or Electabuzz instead here.

vaporeon.png

Vaporeon
- Hydro Pump
- Blizzard
- Rest
- Body Slam

Vaporeon is Vaporeon, it just has immense defensive and offensive capabilities (once oppsing Waters are taken care of). With Dewgong on the team as well, I can even go for freezes relatively comfortably on opposing Vaporeon, opening up opportunities for my own.

sandslash.png

Sandslash
- Body Slam
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance

Sandslash is on this team to keep Electabuzz from being a problem. It hits hard with Earthquake while being able to take a hit if necessary.

Dewgong
Ability: Thick Fat
- Blizzard
- Body Slam
- Rest
- Ice Beam

Venusaur
Ability: Overgrow
- Body Slam
- Hyper Beam
- Sleep Powder
- Razor Leaf

Vaporeon
Ability: Water Absorb
- Blizzard
- Hydro Pump
- Body Slam
- Rest

Mr. Mime
Ability: Soundproof
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunderbolt
- Thunder Wave

Sandslash
Ability: Sand Veil
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance
- Slash

Aerodactyl
Ability: Rock Head
- Double-Edge
- Fire Blast
- Hyper Beam
- Rest

4U-Team #1

omastar.png

Introduction

This 4U team makes use of the fact that Electric types are nowhere to be seen in 4U due to the best Pokemon in the tier being Nidoking. It uses 3 water types who in itself are hard to take down. While Omastar and Blastoise are common choices in the tier, Seadra is an unusual pick. The reason behind picking a third water type and that water type being Seadra is that it gives me a better macthup vs Nidoking since Seadra has a pretty nice matchup vs it. It gives me the surprise factor when my opponent is expecting standard Nidoking as last and plays accordingly and then finds himself staring down another water type which he might now lack the tools to take down. However, Slowpoke can prove to be an issue as it is the Pokemon where the lack of Nidoking and presence of yet another water becomes noticable.

The Team

rapidash.png

Diamond (Rapidash)
- Body Slam
- Fire Blast
- Hyper Beam
- Fire Spin

Rapidash leads well vs the likes of Abra and Venomoth and serves as a mixed attacker with very nice speed. It runs from water Pokemon such as Blastoise and Omastar but this team does not have any trouble switching into them. If you manage to keep it unparalyzed it can pull off some Fire Spin shenanigans but the move is not reliable and should not be used as a standard tactic.

seadra.png

Dragon (Seadra)
- Blizzard
- Surf
- Toxic
- Hydro Pump

Seadra is there for the good matchup vs Nidoking. Taking down Blastoise and Omastar can be a hard task as it is but if there is a third water to take care of it sometimes is not as easily managable. Toxic is filler but works with Fire Spin if you need it. Blizzard for a strong coverage move with a nice freeze chance. Both Surf and Hydro Pump for being able to switch up the water STAB according to situation. It speed ties Nidoking and 2HKOs with Blizzard or Surf while Nido cannot 2HKO without a crit in return.

abra.png

Teleport (Abra)
Ability: Synchronize
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunder Wave
- Substitute

Glass canon special sweeper. Agressive way to handle Porygon which this team needs since I don't have my own Porygon. On here usually not made to last long, it comes in, does as much damage as it can and faints after. Used to hurt everything that needs to be hurt at some point in the game, including Blastoise, Omastar, Porygon, Venomoth...

venomoth.png

Toxic (Venomoth)
- Double-Edge
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore

The sleeper of this team. can take a hit from basically everyting if needed and is important to spread paralysis since I don't use Porygon. Which means it is bound to get statused as well, but that is usually okay, can however prove to be problematic in certain situations.

blastoise.png

Launcher (Blastoise)
- Blizzard
- Body Slam
- Surf
- Rest

Standard Blastoise... no need really to use Hydro Pump over Surf on this team since it has enough water types that use the move already and Blastoise needs to be the most reliable one since its function lies in the earlygame, paralyzing/freezing opposing Pokemon with Body Salm/Blizzard and pressuring Slowpoke into resting to capitalize on with Rapidash, which might have to go 1v1 vs it in an emergency.

omastar.png

Helix (Omastar)
- Blizzard
- Hydro Pump
- Rest
- Seismic Toss

Omastar is the premier Fire type and Scyther wall. It also has the strongest Hydro Pump is the tier, being able to sometimes OHKO Nidoking meanig it has a chance to beat it 1v1 despite being weak to EQ. Seismic Toss does reliable damage and is chosen over Body Slam because I think that Omastar's lack of a good attack stat is too noticable for the para chance to make up for, so I opted for steady damage instead. Blizzard to hit Tangela, Rest to keep it healthy.

Diamond (Rapidash)
Ability: Run Away
- Body Slam
- Fire Blast
- Hyper Beam
- Fire Spin

Dragon (Seadra)
Ability: Poison Point
- Blizzard
- Surf
- Toxic
- Hydro Pump

Teleport (Abra)
Ability: Synchronize
- Psychic
- Seismic Toss
- Thunder Wave
- Substitute

Toxic (Venomoth)
Ability: Shield Dust
- Double-Edge
- Psychic
- Sleep Powder
- Stun Spore

Launcher (Blastoise)
Ability: Torrent
- Blizzard
- Body Slam
- Surf
- Rest

Helix (Omastar)
Ability: Swift Swim
- Blizzard
- Hydro Pump
- Rest
- Seismic Toss

Cool teams, I especially like the 1u team since it has a really cool structure. One option you could consider for the team is to trade Don for Jolteon. Shores up the team a little bit against the water types you mentioned, still checks Zap and it kinda neutralises Jolt. Also gives your team another paralysis spreader, which you might like since your only other reliable para spreaders are Star and lead Zam.

2u team is nice, overall pretty solid. I can see why it might struggle against fast normal types though. Maybe Khan (Counter?) could help here?

I agree with Ortheore on your (nice) 1U team regarding a third para spreader. The main issue I see is actually Jynx because after your Zam is slept your only switch-in is Starmie and if it gets frozen by that said Jynx then you can't paralyse stuff anymore notably Chansey except if Zam wakes up. Obv this scenario isn't gonna happen that often but when it does you virtually lose the game (freezing accidents can happen against Chansey and Waters too sometimes althought in the case of waters it may happen a bit later on the game so you might already have the para spread you need + you have the body slams). I wouldn't necessarily drop Rhydon for Jolteon even if it's an option but I'd consider Stun Spore on Egg, I don't feel like Hyper Beam is that much needed since you have a lot of physical power already and you have the ability to play around things nicely. I guess it's just a question of "how many paralysis spreader do you need to feel comfortable". Lax with Rest and Amnesia could fit well too. I rly like Rest variants in teams like this. Can't wait to see more :)

Whilst I think the 4U team has enough of its own problems that I wouldn't use it, it definitely has a place here. It was a hugely influential team in the metagame, bringing the idea of seadra and water spam to the forefront of the metagame and showing another way to approach the game. As you say though, Slowpoke is quite an issue for it.

I love your thinking behind how to use Clefable in 1U, that's really cool. Inspiring me to try it out :p

I have added another two teams. They are both 3U teams and went 5-0 (Gastly) and 4-0 (Double Water) in the 3U WC respectively. Especially in the semi finals and Finals those were the only teams that got wins for me and basically secured that I could win the whole tournament. (In semi finals Double Water won twice while Gastly won once; In finals Gastly won twice while Double Water won once)

Edit: I will probably at some point share a few more of my main (so not forced to use a non-1U tiered mon) 1U teams. Don't know when but I can tell I will eventually feel like doing it.

Here's some of the reason why:

Everything there is E ranked or worse in 1U.

Clefable, Venusaur, Dugtrio and Sandslash aren't the worst things (but not good) in the world, but the rest are awful in 1U.

Gastly is obviously stupid when Gengar and even Haunter exist. Furthermore, the biggest reason to use Gengar is as a lead to outspeed Jynx, which Gastly fails at.

Mr. Mime is closer to an upgraded Abra than anything else (i.e. bad defenses, no recover).

Aerodactyl has a tiny niche of walling physical Snorlax which Porygon does better (and has the bonus of also beating Surflax).

Dewgong has no business being in 1U when Lapras does everything Dewgong does except better. If you did use it, pretty much every 1U Water and Chansey wall it forever.

Vaporeon isn't as directly outclassed as Dewgong due to Acid Armor, but it has the same issues Dewgong does with being very easily walled.

Electabuzz is pretty much directly outclassed by the faster Jolteon. 105 Speed is awful when Tauros is at 110 and on every team, being outsped by Starmie and Zam isn't good either, and unlike Jolteon it lacks decent coverage moves to threaten Exeggutor and Chansey.

Charizard theoretically sorta has a niche as a Swords Dance sweeper that scares out Eggs and Jynx (which could make it a lead), but generally has a lot of problems: no physical STAB means bulky mons like Snorlax, Slowbro and Lapras aren't really scared of it, its only STAB is generally bad in 1U (Chansey, Starmie and Alakazam prefer to be burned) and 100 speed and Tauros being preserved for revenge killing means Charizard has a hard time setting up a sweep. Sandslash offers actual defensive use in absorbing Electric attacks and walling Zap/Jolt, Kingler has spammable Crabhammers, Pinsir has no common weaknesses and greater power, and Victreebel/Venusaur have status + spammable Razor Leaf which is a vastly more useful STAB than Fire in 1U.

I posted 3 more 1U Teams (1U-Teams #4,#5,#6 in the original post).
2 of them are fairly standard and definitely not only used by myself, but I independantly built them (which is not really rare when it comes to standard RBY teams) and try to explain them a bit. The third is a little bit more unorthodox but nothing too wild I think.
I'm gonna post 2-3 more 1U-teams revolving around strategies that require a more non-standard take of play in the near future (maybe even today if I feel like it)

haha, I am currently implementing the Reflectzam one, which is why it is fucked up. It is not finished yet.
Edit: 1U Team #7 is implemented, as I said, this one is more specific and definitely more matchup dependant than usual. But I did put it to good use lately in several tournament games.

Really cool idea on no psychic lead eggs.
And non lead gengar will catch the exploders by surprise. Especially those counterlax users who boom after a failed counter attempt. If you slam an incoming lax then Scout his counter with eq, he is still out of beam range, and will most likely splode next turn. I used that lineup but with lead gengar and articuno over lapras. Was my ticket to top 10 for the first time.

Wow yeah that lead egg huh...

it's different. Idk how good it is once your opp knows what it does but it's definitely a novel concept. Yet more proof that there is still some room for innovation in RBY I figure... never saw this one coming lol.

"The "usual" tactic with non-lead Jynx that exists, is using a Gengar lead and tries to explode on Zam, which means avoid getting crit and then getting the 2/3 roll to kill."

have you seen my thread RBY 1U (Universal) - Special Techniques! | Pokémon Perfect I explain a diff way of running it

No, obviously not, as it seems. I'll give it a look.

Edit: just read it. Yea, there are many ways to try and myke stuff work. relying on a prediction however is not too reliable (I mean honestly, at that point it is such a bog standard play with Zam leads to double switch to Eggy most of the time when they see a Gengar lead, that I would not be surprised if some players started staying in here and there, not something you should do, but the point is, you are still relying on a prediction.)
The approach I take is not guaranteed to work by far, but I don't need to make the Jynx work at any cost, at worst the opponent has a paralyzed Alakazam, which is not exactly the best sleep blocker vs Jynx anyway.
But yea, cool way regardless...

Yea, I don't see too much problems with stategies that rely on predictions if it's at a point where it's really unlikely the prediction pays off... I use more unreliable prediction-reliant methods all the time (counter everywhere, sd vic being the most concrete examples)
