GSC GSC Re-Tiering: Overview

I thought it best to provide a definitive thread explaining why we are re-tiering, what that means for the old tier, and how the process works.

We are re-tiering because:
  • The tiering philosophy of Pokemon Perfect is, roughly speaking, we don't ban things until we feel they have been proven to be broken, or seriously limit the diversity of the tier.
  • We've decided that adopting a variation of GSC OU doesn't clearly follow this: there may be a tier with fewer Pokemon banned which are not banworthy. There may also a case to be made that there are Pokemon in GSC OU which are banworthy.
  • We have enough active players that we can actually realistically engage in re-tiering.
What this means for the old GSC tier:
  • The old GSC 1U tier, which was very similar to GSC OU, is now called GSC 1U-L, where L stands for Legacy.
  • GSC 1U will have less representation in multi-tier tournaments. It will still have some representation.
How the process works:
  • We start by testing what was previously called GSC 1P - a tier with standard clauses but no Pokemon banned. This tier is renamed to GSC 1B, until the new 1U tier is finalised.
  • If a Pokemon is seen to be banworthy in GSC 1B, then we make a new tier called GSC 1C, with that Pokemon banned.
  • If anything else is found to be banworthy in GSC 1C, those Pokemon are also banned; GSC 1C's name does not change as those Pokemon are banned.
  • This means: before 1U is finalised, before anything is deemed banworthy in GSC 1B, GSC 1B is effectively 1U. If GSC 1C exists, then GSC 1C is effectively 1U, and 1B is effectively 1P.
  • If people feel like there is nothing particularly banworthy in GSC 1B, then GSC 1B becomes GSC 1U, and we will launch an GSC 1U Seasons.
  • If people feel like there is nothing particularly banworthy remaining in GSC 1C, thenGSC 1B becomes GSC 1P, and GSC 1C becomes GSC 1U. Then we will launch GSC 1U Seasons.
