I only started playing RBY a year ago. I hear talk of the body slam tragedy, but that was before my time. I know no other way, but to those who played for years before it was discovered... do you enjoy the game more or less now?

I still enjoy the game a similar amount... the loss in bslam has been partially made up for by counter being incredibly awesome. The game is not as good of a tournament meta though I think, games are much more decided by short game scenarios which can have a big impact on the game that we didn't have before. (ie tauros dittos)

I'm going to say that I enjoy the game more, but that's in spite of the Body Slam changes. Reflect Normals and Tauros dittos are absolutely awful imo, but I enjoy the game more because I simply think I understand the game better on a strategic level than I did before. I really love having that kind of in-depth understanding. Sadly, I don't think my execution of said strategies is up to scratch

I just find it amusing that this was considered a “recent” discovery when everyone in the lunchroom figured this out back in 1998 when trading their Apple for more Chocolate Milk as we all trolled eachother with level 255 Mewtwos...

totally dude i remember being a kid
'yeah bro girls have cooties, wanna hear this new dirty word I heard my uncle say? Oh also did you know that whenever a normal type pokemon uses body slam on another normal type pokemon in red, blue and yellow that the secondary effect of a 30% chance of inflicting paralysis can't occur?'

I think we all just figured out that pokemon of the type can't be effected by the secondary effect of moves from that type so Fire's couldn't be burned, Ice can't be frozen, etc. With 30% chance to paralyze you notice it not happening fairly quickly even when your classmate thinks his parents have the same private parts and babies are shit out. (Although considering family dynamics in this day and age...)
